Colgate Womxn's Fall 2023 Season Recap

Our Colgate ruggers walked onto the pitch Saturday morning with anticipation. It was the parents' weekend game against the University of Pittsburgh. For most of the team, this was their families' first time watching them play rugby. With this game being their second and final conference game of the season, the team felt like it was the perfect game to show their families everything they have been working on this fall. It was also Colgate womxn's rugby's senior day, so the team was looking forward to celebrate the teams two seniors, captains Ellie Humphreys and Mariah Loiocano!

After two weeks off from having games, our womxn arrived at Academy Field this Saturday excited to play the long awaited game against Cornell University. There was extra excitement in the air, given that it was Homecoming Weekend! The Colgate ruggers put in a lot of hard work over the past few weeks and were excited for the returning alumni to see what they can do.

At 5 am Saturday morning, our womxn's team left for their 6 hour bus ride to Akron, OH to play Kent State University. The team got off the bus at 1, and was greeted by the warm and sunny 70 degree Ohio weather. The anticipation was there while our Colgate ruggers warmed up before, what would be many of their first, a challenging and nationally ranked D1 team.

With clear skies and a slight breeze in the air, Saturday afternoon was perfect rugby weather. After a week of working on attack structure, supporting their teammates with the ball, and lineouts, the Colgate ruggers arrived at Academy field, eager to implement what they practiced on Binghamton University

After a fun day of scrimmaging and practicing with the Uticuse Club team on September 2nd and introducing their rookie ruggers to the wonderful sport of rugby, Colgate spent the week focusing on attack structure in preparation for this past weekend's game against the University of Buffalo. Anticipation and excitement to play grew as the team's first official match of the season drew near.

2 weeks ago, the Women's Rugby Team returned to campus to start their 2023 15's season. They were full of excitement and energy, ready to be back with the team and back on the pitch. This season will bring about lots of change, after saying goodbye to Coach Chapman and our 7 beloved teammates from the class of 2023.

Sunday afternoon, Colgate's ruggers loaded the vans and headed to JFK Airport, excited for the week that lay ahead. They landed in Hamilton, Bermuda the next day and immediately headed to the beach to soak in their new surroundings. The players were ready for a week full of trainings and matches to kick off their seven's season.

The Colgate ruggers boarded a bus last Friday and embarked on a 7-hour journey to Pittsburgh. Early the next morning the players had the opportunity to meet and hear from former Colgate rugger, Ciara Pettinos '17. After some words of encouragement, the captains handed out jerseys and the team drove over to the dome, anticipation building. They went into the match with no expectations and were excited to see how they would match up against the University of Pittsburgh.

Colgate's ruggers showed up to the pitch, excited for a great game against Cornell with their parents cheering from the sideline. The team had already played Cornell once this year so they spent the past week learning from that game and improving on areas that they felt weak in. The ruggers dedicated a lot of time to defensive work this week in terms of tackling and FOG (fighting on the ground) and the team was ready to get out there and play.  

After a nice fall break, the Colgate ruggers got right back into things and began preparing for their game against Binghamton University. This past week they went over passing and kicking as well as scrums and lineouts. Saturday came and the players stepped out onto the pitch, excited for a great game.

The long-anticipated game against Notre Dame College finally came to a head last Sunday. The Colgate ruggers put in a lot of hard work the week leading up to it going over scrums, tackling, and working on phases. It turned out to be a beautiful day as fans lined the sides and anticipation from both teams grew.

This past Saturday rugby alumni came out for Colgate’s Homecoming Weekend and lined the sidelines for the mens’ and women’s games. The Colgate Women’s Rugby team showed up early on Saturday to support the men’s team in their game against Syracuse, all the while growing in anticipation for their own game against the University at Buffalo later that day. It turned out to be a beautiful day for rugby and the ruggers were excited to step out onto the pitch.

Bright and early the Colgate ruggers hopped on a bus and drove to Cornell for Sunday’s match. The sun was shining in the blue sky as they took the field for a highly anticipated game against Cornell University.

The Colgate Women’s Rugby team walked onto the field Saturday morning ready for a tough battle against Syracuse University. The players had been working hard the week leading up to this game practicing phases and teaching the rookies scrums and lineouts. The sun was shining bright on them during their early morning warm-ups as they continued with intensity to prepare for the game.

Colgate hosted this year's UNYCRC Jamboree on Sunday. Teams from Buffalo, Cortland, Ithaca, St. Bonaventure, Paul Smith, and Rochester came out to Academy Field to take part in a full-day tournament. The sun was shining bright and spirits were high as the rookies got ready for their very first game with a day full of rugby awaiting them all.

This past week the Women's Rugby Team returned to campus to kick off their 2022 15's season. They were full of smiles and energy, excited to be back with the team and back on the pitch. Preseason took place over 7 days and finished with a scrimmage against the Uticuse Women's Club Team.
